FPS at the Hart Centre: 40th Celebration Exhibition

Cathy Holden writes:

Fleet Pond Society (FPS) is about to reach its 40th birthday. To celebrate, a display of the pictorial history of the Society will run in the Hart Shopping Centre over three days from Thursday 28 to Saturday 30 April. There will be photos and press cuttings from our very first year up to the current day.

Members will be on hand to answer questions about the Society and its history and, if you are suitably impressed, you will be able to sign up and join FPS in support of our continuing work.

Hart Countryside Service will be manning their own stand. They will have games for children to enjoy, such as colour your own bird glider or make your own butterfly.

We are grateful to the Centre management who have generously allowed the use of the vacant El Giardini area. Displays will be there for all three days during normal opening times of the Shopping Centre.

We look forward to chatting to you.”

Volunteer Event This Sunday, 10 April

There will be a volunteer event at Fleet Pond this coming Sunday and all are welcome to attend (see below for registering).

Colin Gray, Chairman of Fleet Pond Society, writes:

“This Sunday we will be in Brookly Wood, and the nearest access point is Avondale Road if you do not come to the workshop.

The task will be to remove as many of the non-native species as possible. There are rhododendrons, cherry laurel and bamboo to be tackled. Cut material will be bagged and taken to the workshop yard for disposal.

Waterproof boots should be adequate although some areas are still wet after the recent rains. We will be working in an area where brambles can be damaging to clothes so please be prepared.”

For further information and booking (which is essential as tools and resources have to be planned beforehand), please contact Hart Countryside Services:

Phone: 01252 623443
 Email: countryside@hart.gov.uk

The Sunday volunteer tasks are supervised by a Hart Countryside Ranger together with members of Fleet Pond Society.

Different people like getting their information in different ways. At Fleet Pond Society we have set up numerous ways which hopefully cater for most tastes and give a wide selection of snippets, photos and articles:

In addition, FPS regularly submits articles for publication in local newspapers, such as Surrey Hants Star Courier and Fleet News & Mail.

Hart District Council Chairman’s Award for Fleet Pond Society’s Volunteer of the Year 2015

Cathy Holden writes:

For the first time since its inception, this award was given to two people, in recognition of their years of work behind the scenes for the Society; sister and brother, Pat and Bill McKenzie. Pat consistently volunteers at various events supporting the Society. Bill is a very keen gardener and, with Pat, has raised funds for the Society through selling the excess produce from his vegetable garden.

Pat accepted the award on behalf of both of them from Councillor Steve Forster at the Society’s recent AGM. Cllr Forster is Portfolio holder on Hart Cabinet for Environment and Technical Services.

On hearing their names announced Pat said she was: ‘Completely overwhelmed; it was such a surprise. After receiving the award, I rang Bill on my mobile and he was absolutely delighted – although he couldn’t believe it at first.’

The Chairman’s Award was set up by Councillor Sharyn Wheale during her time as Hart Council Chairman in 2009. The aim is to recognise the voluntary contribution made over the preceding year to Fleet Pond or to the Society. The Fleet Pond Society Executive Committee is set the task of choosing a deserving volunteer.

Chairman of the Society, Colin Gray said: ‘The Society always tries to select someone whose work behind the scenes is not clearly visible or has not been fully recognised. This year the Committee felt that Pat and Bill were the perfect recipients.’
